2011 National Gang Threat Assessment Released

October 24, 2011 08:27 by dmckenzie

The National Gang Intelligence Center issued its 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment (NGTA) :

  • Since 2009, gang membership has increased by over 40 percent.
  • There are 1,400,000 active gang members in the United States.
  • There are more than 33,000 gangs in the United States.
  • Gang membership increased most significantly in the Northeast and Southeast regions, although the West and Great Lakes boast the highest number of gang members.
  • Gangs are responsible for an average of 48 percent of violent crime in most jurisdictions and up to 90% in several others, according to the NGIC analysis.
  • Gang-related crime and violence is escalating as they employ violence and intimidation to control their territories and illicit operations.
  • Gang members are migrating from urban areas to suburban and rural communities to recruit new members, expand their drug territories, form new alliances and collaborate with rival gangs. Local neighborhood, hybrid and female gang membership is on the rise.

Graffiti to Greatness Project in Home Stretch

January 10, 2011 04:13 by dmckenzie

Graffiti to Greatness is a federally funded project being led by Angels of Grace Foster Familiy Agency to engage community in changing the environments that promote gangs and gang violence. Here is a brief video that says a little more about the project, some of the participants and allows a look at the first mural being completed. I say first in the hopes that there are many more to come!

Update - November 2010

December 9, 2010 09:31 by dmckenzie

Since the Spring of this year I have provided a monthly update to contracted stakeholders participating in implementing a federally funded grant for gang prevention and intervention. The updates were then expanded to include any gang prevention/intervention related activities going on that the County Administrative Office was aware. Now these updates will be provided to the broader community as a way to keep connected on what is happening in the county related to gang prevention.

Attached is the most recent update. Enjoy!

County Presents Gang Initiative to One Voice Policy Board

December 1, 2010 02:32 by dmckenzie

The Fresno County Gang & Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Initiative: Never Give Up! was presented to the Council of Government's One Voice process for consideration as one of the social/economic projects they select to support in Washington DC. For more information on the One Voice Process click here.

A copy of the One Voice Application is attached below.

If selected, Never Give Up! will be a part of an annual trip the COG supports to Washington DC to speak with legislative delegation to secure federal project funding. This year in addition to seeking funding, One Voice will also speak with federal agencies that allocate funds related to the various project goals. They will also develop and present a policy/legislative platform seeking to address challenges that current federally funded projects face in the county.
